According to the data released by WIPO lately, China jumped to the third of the world in PCT applications last year. In 2013, China filed 21,516 international patent applications through PCT, breaking 20,000 for the first time, with a year-on-year growth of 15.6%. Experts expressed that PCT international patent applications has become a scale to measure China’s capacity for independent innovation. The continuing rapid growth of Chinese PCT applications in recent years reflected the improvement of Chinese enterprises in the quality of international operation and ability of market competition.
Data indicated that the total amount of international patent applications through PCT around the world reached a record high 205,000 with a year-on-year growth of 5.1%. USA (57,239), Japan (43,918), China (21,516), Germany (17,927) and Korea (12,386) ranked the top 5. China surpassed Germany and ranked the third for the first time with a global share of 10.5%, rising by near 1%. In the aspect of patent filing by enterprises, ZTE Corporation, with 2,309 published PCT international patent applications, slipped to the second after Japanese Panasonic (2881) among the global applicants. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., ranked the third with 2,094 PCT applications, rising by one position compared with last year.
